Want to change up your house a little more in 2021? Adding technological advancements is definitely a step in the right direction to make it much more modern, effective and appealing to others around. There are various technological improvements and gadgets which can make your home perfect for any occasion.

These occasions or settings might be:

  • A home office, due to the current COVID- 19 pandemic
  • Nursery
  • Bedrooms
  • Movie room
  • The possibilities are truly endless in your dream home!

As such, below are some ideas for different technological advancements for your smart home in 2021.

Home security cameras

Everyone likes to feel safe in their own homes, though if you have had a previous experience of a break and enter, it may be difficult to do so. However, having security cameras installed, particularly if where you live has many entry’s or exits can allow you to monitor who is around your home at all times.

Security cameras also come with alarm systems that can be connected to emergency services in the event of a break-in or unexpected turn of events. Thus, you can go to bed at night feeling safe and protected, even when no one in the home is awake.

Smart plugs

Smart plugs are small devices that fit in between your power socket and the electrical appliance that you are using. In the simplest terms, smart plugs turn things on and off at specific times and/ or days set by a person in advance. However, some advanced tools allow you to track just how much electricity you are using and whether all of it is necessary. Thus, this allows you to save unnecessary money on electrical bills and also makes you more conscious of the large applications using up the most electricity.

Some smart plugs can even be controlled with iOS or Android phones, as well as being able to connect to Alexa, Siri voice command and Google assistant. Thus, these devices can be virtually controlled anywhere at any time, with no extra burden for the user.

An extremely handy use for smart plugs for your new and improved home in 2021 would be to set automated light switches, fans, radios, etc. to work like normal, even when you are not home, and instead on a holiday. Thus, this will be able to trick burglars in particular into thinking that people are home, preventing any horrific break and enters or worse.

Invest in a Google Nest

Google nests can make life at home a lot easier and much more enjoyable, due to its many features and the ease at which it can be controlled and adapted to your home. Some of its many uses are:

Watching or listening to media

These can be voice-controlled, such as requesting a news update to be read out or requesting your own personal assistant to play some smooth jazz for a relaxing night.

Control TVs and speakers from the comfort of your own bed

Have you ever just been so comfortable, but then realised you can’t actually hear the audio of the TV? Now, with google nest, all that must be done is to make a command to increase the volume of the TV, and there you have it!

Plan for the day ahead

  • One of the most convenient purposes of the google nest is that it allows you to plan a set routine from the day through voice activation
  • It can also act as a local guide if you are in unfamiliar territory, where you can easily search for tourist attractions and learn about its history, etc.
  • You can also wake up to the voice of this device informing you of the weather, traffic, etc. so that you can plan or alter your travel plans accordingly.

Smart heating and cooling systems

Being comfortable in your own home is important, especially when the climate can become unpredictable and unenjoyable. Depending on what you choose, some systems are eco-friendly and hence allow you to save on your energy bill, so do your research before settling on a particular brand!

This can be a great asset to your smart home, as you can alter the temperatures as often/ rarely as desired. Some brands also allow you to set different temperatures for all parts of the house so that everyone is satisfied.

Technological modifications if you are working from home

With the current climate of COVID- 19, working from home is a common occurrence which most of us may be facing. As such, it is important to have a technology checklist for your home office of what is required or recommended to maximise the efficiency of working from home.

Technological modifications for future-proof

Do you have elderly parents living with you that may require specific needs in the near future? For those with special needs, moving around and performing everyday tasks can be tedious and take away your energy from what you really want to achieve. Thus, there are significant changes that you can make within your home to effectively accomplish simple tasks. Some modifications include:

  • Smart blinds
  • Voice-controlled lights
  • Automated transportation up and down the stairs

Rather than changing them later on. Some simply future-proof designs or modifications will make a home more adaptable and disability friendly.

 What to do now?

If you are feeling inspired to make a change, or a positive modification to suit your current lifestyle, now is the time to start planning out your new smart home for 2021! Begin by making a checklist of what you think is necessary for your life, for example, automated lights or faster cleaning. After that, do some research to find out what brand will best suit your budget, living style and aesthetic preferences. Hopefully, this article prompted you to think outside the box and come up with innovative ideas to personalise your home a little more. Happy planning!
