What Can You Do with a Lonely Sock

Everyone is familiar with the mystery of the lonely sock – no matter how careful you are, there is always one sock, missing it’s mate. Whether it has fallen out behind the wardrobe, or it has joined its ancestors, I really can’t help you find it. I can, however, give you a few suggestions on what you can do with a lonely socks, you will never again be able to put on: 1. Use it as a cleaning cloth – A lonely sock, in perfect condition, yet oh-so-companionless, is a sad, sad sight. One that torments the dreams of every housewife. To protect yourself from the haunted dreams, you can always do what your granny used to when she had to deal with the lonesome sock. Just wash it, put it on like a glove and use it to clean… or don’t put it on your arm, if you have a mild podophobia (fear of feet). 2. Make a sock doll – Another way of dealing with a solitary sock is to grab a needle, some thread, wool, as many colourful beads as you would like, and use your imagination. Do you remember how much fun you had when your nana made you one? Why not do the same with your kids – sometimes the simplest of toys are the ones that help us (and consequently the kids) to develop a powerful, creative imagination. 3. Warm up your cold feet – This tip is applicable, only if you have a perfectly good sock (no holes in it!). Fill it up with sea salt or rice and tie the loose end – just to make sure you wouldn’t have to sweep or even vacuum clean the floor later. Place it in the microwave for 2-3 minutes. Afterwards, you can enjoy the radiating heath for more than an hour. The remedy for cold feet works pretty well for sinusitis, too. 4. Make an aroma sachet – You can make your own aroma sachet from and old sock. It will not only deodorize your clothes, but if you fill it with lavender heads and other herbs, it will keep the moths away from. For some reason moths are repelled by the smell of lavender and won’t come anywhere near your drawers of wardrobe, if you strategically place some sachets in...

Medieval Glory

The Most Beautiful Castles in the World In complete controversy with my previous posts, I have chosen to name this one “Medieval Glory” with the more understandable subtitle “The Most Beautiful Castles in the World”. Why have I chosen to write on this topic? The reason is simple – Valentine’s Day is almost here, I am in a very, very romantic mood (who wouldn’t be after seeing all those “love posts” in other blogs), and I have been wondering how to spend the holiday with my boo. While a trip to Europe, the capital of the medieval action, at least according to my history teacher that is, is out of the question, I can’t help but dream at least a little bit. So I have decided to treat myself to a virtual excursion all around the world, searching for those romantic, tragic, yet so beautiful monuments of an age of damsels in distress, brave knights and chevaliers; princesses and princes; kings and queens who spent fortunes to build the most beautiful castles in the world. Having explained the reasons behind writing that post, I won’t keep you waiting any more: Peles Castle, Romania And off we go straight into the heart of Balkan history with the Neo-Renaissance Peles Castle in Romania. Hidden in deep forests in the Carpathian Mountains, this astonishing architectural miracle was built in the end of the 19th century. Not only is the view of the palace breathtaking, but it also hosts one of the finest art collections in Europe. Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany Most of you who are fascinated with medieval history and architecture must have seen pictures of the “castle of the fairy-tale king” Ludwig II. The wild nature surrounding the castle makes it a perfect refuge, which is the reason the shy king decided to build the Romanesque Revival castle up in the Bavarian mountains. Even the name of the palace is romantic and beautiful, as it literally means the “new swan stone”. Matsumoto Caste, Japan Leaving Europe, and its tragic history full of mythical creatures, we are heading to the “Crow Castle” in Japan. It is by far the most beautiful castles in the country, earning its name due to the entirely black exterior. Unlike most Japanese palaces, this one is built on a plane rather than high in the mountains. Guaita Castle, San Marino Just because I want to show that not only the big countries have rich history, and beautiful castles, I am returning to Europe and the small Republic of San Marino. Right above the capital, you can see the mythical Guaita Fortress. It has been guarding the city for...

Old Stuff, New Purpose

Old Stuff, New Purpose

Part of my journey to becoming the ultimate modern housekeeper who can do it all – have a successful career, a swanky, organized home, and throw the best parties, everyone wants to be invited to, is to become crafty, and learn how to re-purpose old stuff, turning it into something utterly different – classier and more useful. After a thorough Internet search, and getting familiar with terms like upcycling and downcycling, I can safely claim one thing – whatever it is you want to re-purpose, somewhere around the world, a resourceful lady has already thought of it, and made a thorough tutorial, just waiting for you to read it! Once I realised it, there was nothing that could stop me from getting my hands dirty, and trying some projects of my own… The bad news is that sadly, I am still not that skilled in the domestic DIY projects, so most of what I tried looked much like the infamous epic Pinterest fails. Nevertheless, I am determined to become a master of re-purposing but in the mean time, and especially since I wouldn’t want to have wasted your precious time on my troubles, I would like to share with you some of the best “upcycles” I found: 1. Old China Cabinet, New Mini Garden Storage Everyone knows that the garden shed is by far the most useful outbuilding, you can have in your garden. The Brits, in particular are crazy about it, comment my friends at Gardening in Melbourne! However, not all backyards are big enough to house an outbuilding, even a small one. The good news is that creative minds have come up with a great solution – you can re-purpose that ugly, and totally out-of-place, old China cabinet, your mother insist that you keep. Here is how it was turned into a fabulous mini garden shed with just a coat of fresh paint! 2. Old Tires, New Planters Speaking of gardens, a dedicated gardener always needs new planters, and I fell in love in the idea of using old tires as planters. It turns out this is one of the best ways to recycle the, otherwise un-recyclable, items, and give them a totally new purpose. The best thing about the idea is that you can literally place them anywhere – you can hang them like a swing, place them on the ground, put them on the fence, paint them in bright colours, arrange them in a line and make an entire painting, and so on. 3. Old Suitcase, New Bed for Your Pet I saw these in a magazine, and they cost about $80, so imagine my...

Stylish Headboard Ideas

If your living room can help your guests get a peak at your personality, preferences, sense of colour and style, the bedroom stands for your most intimate feelings. How you choose to arrange the one place in your home that is all yours, and no one else’s can speak louder than a thousand words about you. Before you rush in, and critically look around your bedroom, read the article. Here we are going to discuss how a stylish headboard can entirely change the style, flow and even feeling of the place. Stylish Headboards with Storage Solutions: 1. Aquarium Headboard Idea Have you always wanted to have a big aquarium, and take care of numerous exotic species? If you can’t find the space at home, why not order one custom-made headboard. Take a look at the picture above, and get inspired to get something similar for your bedroom. Not only do psychologists claim that observing fish floating gracefully in the water soothes the nerves, and helps to reduce your stress levels, but they can “cure” your insomnia. 2. Book Headboard Ideas Whether you don’t have enough space to store all your books, or you simply enjoy having your favourite volumes nearby for a late read, you can get inspired by those incredibly creative book headboards that will not only help you reinvent your bedroom, and add a fantastic focal point to the space, but will provide you with a great excuse to get even more editions to build the headboard. Naturally, there are other more upscale variations of the book-themed headboards – like the one just above. It consist of vintage volumes, pinned open to the wall (or placed on a board first). While the idea is certainly intriguing and fascinating, as a self-proclaimed bookworm, I simply can’t accept such disrespect and violation towards books. 3. Simple Storage Unit, Used as a Headboard According to my friends from Furniture Removals in Melbourne, there is a new trend rising up amongst people living in small homes. They choose a practical, yet intricate and smart, headboard solution that both increases the storage capacity of their bedroom and jazzes up the place. How about that – they put a simple storage unit painted in bold colours to fit the colour scheme of the room behind the bed, and make the most of the newly discovered storage unit. Art Headboard Ideas Here, I will let the pictures speak for themselves, but let me tell you one thing first – you can make any object an art piece, if you put your mind to it. I was certainly astonished by the idea to use an...
