Old Stuff, New Purpose

Part of my journey to becoming the ultimate modern housekeeper who can do it all – have a successful career, a swanky, organized home, and throw the best parties, everyone wants to be invited to, is to become crafty, and learn how to re-purpose old stuff, turning it into something utterly different – classier and more useful. After a thorough Internet search, and getting familiar with terms like upcycling and downcycling, I can safely claim one thing – whatever it is you want to re-purpose, somewhere around the world, a resourceful lady has already thought of it, and made a thorough tutorial, just waiting for you to read it! Once I realised it, there was nothing that could stop me from getting my hands dirty, and trying some projects of my own… The bad news is that sadly, I am still not that skilled in the domestic DIY projects, so most of what I tried looked much like the infamous epic Pinterest fails. Nevertheless, I am determined to become a master of re-purposing but in the mean time, and especially since I wouldn’t want to have wasted your precious time on my troubles, I would like to share with you some of the best “upcycles” I found: 1. Old China Cabinet, New Mini Garden Storage Everyone knows that the garden shed is by far the most useful outbuilding, you can have in your garden. The Brits, in particular are crazy about it, comment my friends at Gardening in Melbourne! However, not all backyards are big enough to house an outbuilding, even a small one. The good news is that creative minds have come up with a great solution – you can re-purpose that ugly, and totally out-of-place, old China cabinet, your mother insist that you keep. Here is how it was turned into a fabulous mini garden shed with just a coat of fresh paint! 2. Old Tires, New Planters Speaking of gardens, a dedicated gardener always needs new planters, and I fell in love in the idea of using old tires as planters. It turns out this is one of the best ways to recycle the, otherwise un-recyclable, items, and give them a totally new purpose. The best thing about the idea is that you can literally place them anywhere – you can hang them like a swing, place them on the ground, put them on the fence, paint them in bright colours, arrange them in a line and make an entire painting, and so on. 3. Old Suitcase, New Bed for Your Pet I saw these in a magazine, and they cost about $80, so imagine my...

Stylish Headboard Ideas

If your living room can help your guests get a peak at your personality, preferences, sense of colour and style, the bedroom stands for your most intimate feelings. How you choose to arrange the one place in your home that is all yours, and no one else’s can speak louder than a thousand words about you. Before you rush in, and critically look around your bedroom, read the article. Here we are going to discuss how a stylish headboard can entirely change the style, flow and even feeling of the place. Stylish Headboards with Storage Solutions: 1. Aquarium Headboard Idea Have you always wanted to have a big aquarium, and take care of numerous exotic species? If you can’t find the space at home, why not order one custom-made headboard. Take a look at the picture above, and get inspired to get something similar for your bedroom. Not only do psychologists claim that observing fish floating gracefully in the water soothes the nerves, and helps to reduce your stress levels, but they can “cure” your insomnia. 2. Book Headboard Ideas Whether you don’t have enough space to store all your books, or you simply enjoy having your favourite volumes nearby for a late read, you can get inspired by those incredibly creative book headboards that will not only help you reinvent your bedroom, and add a fantastic focal point to the space, but will provide you with a great excuse to get even more editions to build the headboard. Naturally, there are other more upscale variations of the book-themed headboards – like the one just above. It consist of vintage volumes, pinned open to the wall (or placed on a board first). While the idea is certainly intriguing and fascinating, as a self-proclaimed bookworm, I simply can’t accept such disrespect and violation towards books. 3. Simple Storage Unit, Used as a Headboard According to my friends from Furniture Removals in Melbourne, there is a new trend rising up amongst people living in small homes. They choose a practical, yet intricate and smart, headboard solution that both increases the storage capacity of their bedroom and jazzes up the place. How about that – they put a simple storage unit painted in bold colours to fit the colour scheme of the room behind the bed, and make the most of the newly discovered storage unit. Art Headboard Ideas Here, I will let the pictures speak for themselves, but let me tell you one thing first – you can make any object an art piece, if you put your mind to it. I was certainly astonished by the idea to use an...

Living in a Small Space

Living in a Small Space

Recently, I stumbled upon some rather interesting facts about people making the most of living in a small space. While I love my spacious house in the suburbs, and can’t imagine cramming myself in a two-bedroom apartment with my boyfriend, some people don’t all the rooms and the backyard. As it turns out some people even prefer small housing… I read about a couple from Washington, D.C. that has happily exchanged their vast home for a 13 sq. meter establishment (I just can’t bring myself to call it a house). Speak about invading your partner’s personal space! While many couples neglect living together since each partner values his/ her privacy, and cases of couples sleeping in separate rooms due to sleeping habits incompatibility or just the sheer need of alone-time are becoming more and more popular, choosing to stay in a limited space – one in which most people might even feel claustrophobic, is a sign not only of bravery and love, but also of creative thinking, as one must really be resourceful to get all the basic living necessities like shower, oven, sink and etc. in a 13 sq. meter home. One problem that seems to be solved by moving to a small space is that you don’t actually need to hire house removals to get your belongings to the new home – there simply isn’t that much space. In other words, people living there need to learn how to manage without many of the gadgets others can’t go without. Nevertheless, the experts at Home Removals Melbourne believe that it can be a life-changing experience, not only one that will significantly lower your moving costs. How Can You Live in a Small Space: Since I already told you about the Washington couple, I am going to give you an example with them, and how have they pulled it off. See pics of their beautiful dwelling here. As it turns out, it is all a matter of working with the available space, and using it to its best. If under living in a small space – as small as 13 sq meters, you have been imagining a crammed, shabby place, prepare yourself for a big surprise. In what has been designated to be the living area, the couple has a plasma TV with a couch right opposite of it, so both partners can relax there in what looks like a luxurious living room, if only it wasn’t that small… Right under the TV, you will notice a small wooden panel that can be pulled up, and turned into a desk, should the home owners decide to bring home some work....

Fight Noise with Noise

Fight Noise with Noise

Like a modern girl, living in an apartment down town, I can certainly claim that traffic noise as well as midnight trash pick ups, hissing radiator, car alarms, and etc., are my worst enemies at night. However, being able to sleep through all that is not always easy, unless I am so tired that once I get into bed I am dead to the world for at least 8 hours. What has always been a surprise to me is that the best way to fight night life noise is with noise. Whether you are going to run a white noise app on your smart phone, let a fan or an A/C hum in your room, is left to your personal preference. However, if you have your heart set on going with the fan, you need to ask yourself if you would be able to take it everywhere with you when you aren’t sleeping home. Getting accustomed to certain type of white noise can be rather addictive. I used to have this great small fan that I left on the entire night. I hadn’t really thought what it would be like, if it ever broke until it actually did, and I was left sleepless for a couple of nights. Naturally, my solution was to run to the nearest home depot and get a new one. What I hadn’t anticipated was that, even though my new “friend” was the same brand, it didn’t sound at all like my old fan – it took me weeks to get used to the new lullaby! If you, like me, are a light sleeper, you will be happy to know that there is always a way to fight noise, and avoid sleep deprivation. My friends at Fantastic Cleaning Fitzroy North have a few suggestions on how to get your beauty sleep: 1. Noise machine These little fellows are amazing! iTunes’ WhiteNoise app is one of the best solutions to ever have been offered on the market. It works great for me, especially the rainy day melody. However, if you are more sensitive to changes in noise level, you might be disturbed by the small pause at the end of the record, right when it loops from the beginning. Never the less experts at cleaning in Fitzroy North swear by these devises, and claim that even your pet will be calmed by them. Take your dog, for example, it is far more sensitive towards sudden street noises (the sharpened senses, and all…), and it can’t help but leap to check every sign of disturbance, right? With one of those machines the chances of being waken up...
